Actually, I would think twice about maroon—it is pretty much an outdated color, and one that ruled in the 90′s. An updated version of the maroon is Cranberry–which is red base, where as maroon is purple based. Anyway, go to the opposite side of the color wheel and pick up the greens. If you just have to have maroon, I would dump the hunter green of the 90′s and choose a more modern sage green or a pretty olive green. A pretty accent color would be either a pale butter yellow, or a rich taupe. Use a creamy white for your neutral, and either bronze or gold for your metal accents for a more traditional look, or use lots of silver for a modern and contemporary look. Be creative, Have fun and Good luck!
P.S I have a degree in interior design.
Also–stay away from "mauve"—a really hideous color from the 1980′s!
Hunter green or a nice rich cream would look nice.
are you sure about the maroon if you absolutely love it OK but its really an "out" color .try and match it to very pale taupe or anything from the dessert colors -from sand to a paper bag brown don’t use cream or it will scream i love the 90′s
i suggest you go with more of a deep red. maroon tends to look to garish and/or purplish. Also complimentary colors are found on the opposite side of the color wheel. go to your paint store and check it out!
I used summer sand (a medium shade of tan) as accents with my maroon den – I love it. My great room has antique white, summer sand and maroon on various walls – it gives it a warm and cozy feel to the large area. I didn’t care if it was an in color or not – it is what I wanted.
I have a very deep burgandy room with navy & cream accents. I love it.
maybe a like gold, with creme. or a shade lighter of the maroon.
mauve.
I would suggest one large wall or your main visible or center of attraction wall as maroon (we used deep plum) and pick lighter shades for the other 3 walls instead of 2 walls dark & 2 walls light. If you don’t want mauve, then there is cream/beige or even mint green. If going to have two complete different colors (like reddish & a greenish), then tie them together with a wallpaper border that has the various colors/shades in them. Blend your wall color with the fabric colors in your room. If too much, add an area rug of either a lighter or darker shade for blended accent.
